Environmental Defence inspires change by connecting people with environmental issues that affect their daily lives in their homes, workplaces and neighbourhoods.
Environment Defense has championed the following causes with success:
Banning harmful chemicals
They led the charge to ban a hormone-disrupting chemical, bisphenol A (BPA) in plastic baby bottles; after that success, they're now working to get BPA out of all food and beverage containers.
Protecting green space
Their work led to the creation of a 1.8 million acre greenbelt in Ontario. The Greenbelt, now five years old, protects farmland, rivers and streams and environmentally-sensitive areas from urban development.
Greening the power
They worked with the Green Energy Act Alliance to get the groundbreaking Green Energy Act passed in Ontario. The Act, one of the best in the world, provides strong support for the creation of green power.
Cleaning the beaches
Environment Defence works with communities all over Canada to improve the environmental quality and management of thebeautiful beaches and marinas. A record number of sites have applied for the 2011 award, and soon they'll see the flag flying on both coasts and on many beaches in between.
Greening the economy
Environment Defence partnered with the United Steel workers to support the creation of good green jobs in the new clean energy economy. Blue Green Canada gets workers, businesses and governments focused on building a successful, sustainable economy. In Ontario, new jobs have already been created in Windsor, London, Mississauga, Burlington, and even more future jobs have been announced.
