60 children, aged between 13 and 17 years, who are presently residing in the shelter homes run by Aasraa Trust participated in a self initiated clean up drive on the streets of Dehradun on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

These children are members of The Clean Doon Brigade, a joint initiative of Aasraa Trust and The Doon School Old Boys’ Society – Class of 1966. The drive was organized to promote healthy habits and importance of both personal as well as community hygiene among youths of the society.

Inspired from the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the children from shelter homes of Aasraa Trust took upon the task of cleaning Bindal area near The Doon School. The areas included Chakrata road, Mall road, Tilak road and Connaught Place. The children stepped out on the roads with their sets of cleanliness tools and garbage bags. They were supported by Aasraa team members Amit Balodi, Virendra Dangwal, Suraj Chettri, Piyush Khanduri, Narayan, Hemant, Rajendra Prasad and Sakir.

“It is very important for our children to learn the importance of community building. The children who are living at our shelter homes must realize that it is essential for each and every individual to contribute towards the betterment of society without any expectations. We want them to develop the habit of cleanliness which will stay with them for life.”, said Amit Balodi, Operations Manager, Aasraa Trust.

Aasraa works towards the social advancement of slum and street children in Dehradun. The 360 degree approach employed by Aasraa ensures the holistic care of all its children which include quality education, nutrition, medical care, clothing, residential care and vocational training. The USP of Aasraa is that there is no unreachable or unteachable child. Since its inception in 2009, the organization has grown from 35 children to more than 1,800 across 21 projects.
