Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency (RAKWMA) launched their advanced recycling program in late 2017 in a bid to transform the way the Ras Al Khaimah community disposes of waste.

The campaign, which has been rolled out with support from His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, began with the education of recycling to communities using colour-coded green and brown recycling bags for food waste and other recyclables.

Sonia Nasser, Executive Director of RAKWMA said: “Our main objective is to significantly improve the RAK community’s commitment to sustainability and environmental protection from a grassroots level through to businesses and the highest echelons of Government. We are proud to be achieving that through our communities and plans for Q4 will demonstrate how this initiative can grow and become a part of every day life in the emirate.”

Green and brown bags are continually being distributed on a bi-monthly basis to the local residential communities of Al Dhait, Khuzam, Rams and the South region Jazeerah, Rifaa and RAK City. Once filled with the correct matter, they are discarded and taken to RAK’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF), where it is sorted and processed.

Awareness and education drives are planned for Q4 including the re-launch of RAK Green Schools in September, an initiative introducing a green rating system to recognise students and teachers for promoting and participating in proactive environmental practices, as well as the Hotel Sustainability Meeting and the RAK Green Hotels awards.

In order to enforce sustainable waste management practices in the hospitality sector, RAKWMA coordinated with the Tourism Development Authority in 2016 and developed regulations that impose waste source segregation and the designation of a person responsible of all waste management matter called a “Green Ambassador”

A yearly inspection in all hotels of Ras Al Khaimah is conducted in collaboration with the Tourism Development Agency in order to evaluate the waste management practices and a 30 % recycling rate target has been set to hotels by 2018. RAK Green Hotels awards will take into account the recycling rate as well as the results of the inspections.

RAKWMA are currently also in a partnership with Hilton Hotels as part of their Global Week of Service campaign which challenges residents in Al Dhait to collect as much plastic as possible and rewarding winners with staycations at Hilton properties.

Brown and green recycling bags can be collected from the following RAK Recycles centres:

Al Hamra Mall Food Waste Treatment Center – 5am to 2am
RAK Fruit and Vegetable Market Food Waste Treatment Center – 7am to 3pm
Mairid Fruit, Vegetable and Fish Market Food Waste Treatment Center – 3pm to 12am
