UAE school-children are to be entertained by a series of stories with marvelous Eco-heroes on a number of local adventures.  The characters feature in ‘The Eco-heroes’, a children’s’ book series created by ‘Save our World’ to engage and educate children on sustainability related topics and instill environmental awareness from an early age.

The first book ‘The Eco-heroes Recycling Trip Trouble’, is available in English and Arabic and will be launched at an event being held in Dubai on 14th October 2018. ‘The Eco-heroes’ series is written by Colette Barr and illustrated by Leona Collins, the two Dubai residents who have set up the new company ‘Save our World’.  The books are written and printed in the UAE using recycled paper and the Dubai font.

Innovative, and unprecedented in any book, The Eco-heroes series represent the UAE’s main nationalities, and are brought to life with playful and enchanting illustrations. The books’ central characters will resonate with UAE-based children; the series features five fictional children who are Emirati, Indian, European and South African.  Action-packed from the start, and laugh-out-loud funny in parts, the heroes embark on a school trip to a recycling plant, with hilarious and also thought-provoking incidents throughout the story. ‘The Eco-heroes Recycling Trip Trouble is the first of a series of five, with the other book focusing on energy, plastic, food and water with the other books launching over the next year.

“That children learn best through play and story-telling is an age-old wisdom, already proven and tested.  Hands-on environmental education is the best way to deeply engage young people and inspire a generation of environmental stewards.”  explains Barr, she adds, “The whole purpose of the books is to create a sustainable future through education.  The more children know about, and appreciate the environment, the more likely they are to protect it. We want to raise awareness of a serious subject in a fun, relatable and memorable way.”

As well as publishing and promoting the book, Barr and Collins are taking on an ambitious outreach programme to help imbed the central message of their stories. The books come with fun facts that are immensely useful to teachers and parents as they seek to educate children about the environment.  In addition, the accompanying website www.SaveOurWorld.me will be jammed-packed with activities, learning resources and games, sure to be a valuable tool for inspired learning.  The authors’ have committed to a busy schedule of visits to schools and educational groups, and not limiting their audience to children, they are also seeking to address staff from the corporate sectors.

“Nurturing a sense of adventure and wonder in our world can be helped by a child-friendly book filled with attractive pictures. It has been an immense pleasure to be given the opportunity to use my skills as an illustrator on a local project. It seemed pertinent to me that children in the GCC learn from books that are funny, enjoyable and with recognizable characters, unlike the majority of their educational resources that focus on facts and people based on far-away places that may be alien to them. The story-lines and characters our kids empathise with are more likely to spur them to action.” adds illustrator Collins.

“There can be no issue of greater contemporary importance than teaching children new approaches to protect and make the environment cleaner, healthier and more pleasant to live in.”  explains Barr.  “As a mother, I know how difficult it can be to talk about complex issues, bound up with science and politics, in an engaging way. When the future of the planet is tied into decisions the younger generation make today, it’s crucial to have conversations with our children about the environment.  We strongly believe our Eco-heroes series of books are a brilliant starting point for these important discussions”. concludes Barr.

‘The Eco-heroes Recycling Trip Trouble’ is published in English and Arabic and available from www.saveourworld.me and a number of bookstores.

Member of the press are invited to the launch event for ‘The Eco-heroes Recycling Trip Trouble which will be held at Our Space in the Lamborghini building Sheikh Zayed Road on Sunday 14th October at 7pm. To attend the launch event email getintouch@saveourworld.me
