A growing number of renewable energy projects are being displayed this year at the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2017).
The growth in renewably energy projects in the UAE and the Middle East and Africa region is a reflection of the rapidly falling cost of renewable alternatives including photovoltaics (PV), concentrated solar power (CSP), and wind energy; and the reliable supply these sources can provide. The focus on renewable energy and the green economy was also discussed today at the World Green Economy Summit (WGES).
Engineer Thamer Sharhan, Managing Director of ACWA Power attended the opening ceremony of WGES. The Summit, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai brought together world-class experts in sectors advancing the global green economy and sustainability agenda.
Furthermore, visitors to ACWA Power’s stand learned about developer’s latest projects, including the 200 MW second phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, inaugurated earlier this year, which powers more than 50,000 homes in Dubai. During the event, CSP technology to be used for the 700MW fourth phase Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park was also showcased. The project is by far the largest single CSP project in the world at a levelised tariff of US $7.30 cents per kilowatt hour; a cost level that competes with fossil fuel generated electricity without subsidy for reliable and dispatchable solar energy through the night. The projects reflect a new era for the solar industry and represent a pivotal moment for the UAE and the region to reach a clean energy future and achieve a green economy.
