The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has recorded the first-ever nesting of an Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) in the emirate, marking a significant milestone for marine biodiversity in Abu Dhabi. Discovered on Saadiyat Island during a routine monitoring patrol, the nesting is a rare and exceptional occurrence. Abu Dhabi’s mainland coast and offshore islands are primarily recognised as Hawksbill turtle nesting grounds, with the first confirmed Green turtle nest recorded only as recently as 2023. The Olive Ridley nesting represents a further remarkable record, and the third confirmed nesting marine turtle species in the emirate’s waters.

The species was confirmed through DNA barcoding undertaken in partnership with Khalifa University.

Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: “The first recorded nesting of an Olive Ridley turtle in Abu Dhabi is a landmark moment for marine biodiversity in the emirate. It reflects the health of our waters, the resilience of our ecosystems, and the sustained impact of Abu Dhabi’s long-term commitment to conservation”.

“Scientific discoveries such as this demonstrate that evidence-based conservation delivers results. They strengthen our understanding of the species that depend on our coastal habitats and affirm our responsibility to protect them, for the ecosystems they sustain and for the generations that will inherit them. That Abu Dhabi’s waters continue to offer sanctuary to globally vulnerable species is a powerful reflection of what sustained, multi-front conservation efforts can achieve, and of the resilience we are building for both people and wildlife in a rapidly changing climate.”

The nest was discovered during a routine Saadiyat Turtle Patrol monitoring schedule by EAD’s turtle patrol volunteers, who monitored it closely throughout the incubation period. Tracking the nest via a solar-powered camera and supported by EAD’s marine specialists, the volunteers intensified their patrols as the expected hatching date approached, returning every morning and through the night to supervise the emergence of hatchlings.

The turtle nested on 29 March 2026, laying 109 eggs. Hatchlings emerged on 25 May 2026, with 40 successfully reaching the sea, representing a hatching success rate of about 37 per cent. As the first recorded Olive Ridley nesting in Abu Dhabi and an occurrence at the edge of the species’ known nesting range, some variability in reproductive outcome is to be expected. The successful emergence confirms that local conditions were sufficient to support the completion of the full reproductive cycle and provides an important baseline for future monitoring and conservation planning.

As Olive Ridley turtles have never previously been recorded nesting in Abu Dhabi, EAD partnered with Khalifa University to confirm the identification through DNA barcoding. The technique compares short, standardised genetic sequences against international reference databases, enabling scientists to distinguish species with a high degree of confidence. The analysis confirmed a 99 per cent genetic match to Lepidochelys olivacea, providing robust scientific confirmation of the discovery.

Maitha Al Hameli, Acting Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: “Confirming the identity of the nesting turtle through DNA barcoding was an essential step in ensuring this finding was supported by the highest level of scientific evidence. Beyond establishing a new nesting record, this discovery contributes to our understanding of marine turtle distribution across the region and reflects the value of long-term scientific programmes in identifying important ecological changes in Abu Dhabi’s marine environment.”

Olive Ridley turtles are recognised internationally as indicator species, meaning their presence reflects the overall condition of the marine ecosystems they inhabit. As ecosystem engineers, they play an important role in maintaining healthy coastal environments. Feeding on invertebrates such as jellyfish, crabs, shrimp and molluscs, they help maintain balance within the marine food web and support the health of coral reefs and seagrass habitats. Their nesting activity also transfers nutrients from the marine environment to coastal ecosystems, supporting beach vegetation and contributing to natural shoreline stability.

Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, Olive Ridley turtles nest at relatively few locations worldwide. Every confirmed nest therefore carries international conservation significance while contributing to scientific understanding of the species’ distribution and breeding behaviour.

The discovery builds on more than 25 years of marine turtle research by EAD. Four of the world’s seven marine turtle species have been recorded in the emirate: Hawksbill, Green, Loggerhead and Olive Ridley. Hawksbill turtles are the predominant nesting species, with Green and Olive Ridley nesting representing rare but significant records, while Loggerhead turtles remain occasional visitors. According to EAD’s latest aerial survey, conducted in 2024, Abu Dhabi’s waters support a marine turtle population of about 8,000 individuals, while nesting surveys have confirmed at least 17 nesting locations on offshore islands. EAD’s broader conservation work, including rescue, rehabilitation and satellite tracking research, continues to advance the long-term protection of these populations.

Together with the first confirmed Green turtle nest, recorded in 2023, this discovery continues to expand scientific understanding of marine turtle ecology in the emirate and reinforces the importance of sustained ecological monitoring as a cornerstone of marine biodiversity conservation.

Airports are undergoing an industry-defining change, with innovations and advancements in technology enabling significant improvements to their facilities across the board, meeting passenger expectations.

With global air passenger traffic projected to exceed 12 billion by 2030, the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA) region is expected to have a substantial share. As a result, airports are working diligently to transform themselves into dynamic destinations and refine the passenger experience.

Technology is revolutionizing the airport industry, introducing fundamental changes in how airports are designed, operated, financed, and experienced. Airports are now in a state of huge transformation, while the evolution of the user experience is advancing at an unprecedented rate.

As tectonic transformations redefine the global airport industry — from digitalisation and automation to sustainability and next-generation infrastructure — airports across the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) are accelerating investments to future-proof capacity, efficiency, and passenger experience. Against this backdrop, Airport Show 2026, taking place at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) from October 12 to 14, emerges as the region’s essential meeting point where strategy meets implementation. The event brings together airport authorities, civil aviation leaders, operators, consultants, and technology providers to explore how these industry shifts translate into real projects, procurement opportunities, and operational innovation across some of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

Reflecting these transformations, Airport Show provide a focused platform for discovery and collaboration. The GSE Zone highlights the evolution of sustainable and autonomous ground support operations, showcasing electric, smart, and efficiency-driven airside solutions. The dedicated platform is the go-to event for industry stakeholders seeking insight, partnerships, and technologies shaping the next era of airport transformation across the MEASA region.

Jaffar Dawood, Divisional Senior Vice President for UAE Airport Operations at dnata, a leading global air and travel services provider, commented: “Ground handling is entering an important period of transformation, driven by new technology, evolving customer expectations and the industry’s collective commitment to sustainability.

“As a supporter of the GSE Zone at Airport Show, dnata is pleased to contribute to a key platform showcasing the future of ground support equipment and airport operations. We continue to explore and adopt new technologies that will help us build smarter, more efficient operations today, while preparing for the future needs of Al Maktoum International Airport. Across our global network, we are deploying 800 new ground support equipment units in 10 countries, representing an investment of US$110 million. As part of this programme, we are progressively replacing diesel-powered GSE with hybrid and electric alternatives, supporting our broader sustainability goals.

“We are also advancing automation across our operations. In the UAE, we have commenced trials of TractEasy EZTow autonomous baggage, helping reduce manual processes while enhancing safety and efficiency on the ramp. These initiatives reflect our long-term commitment to practical, scalable solutions that support the future of ground handling.”

More than 150 exhibitors and 150 buyers from 20+ countries will participate in the Airport Show, which will have Global Airport Leaders’ Forum (GALF), Airport Security Middle East, Air Traffic Control (ATC) Forum, and Women in Aviation (WIA) Middle East Conference, as co-located conferences.

Being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, the silver jubilee edition of one of the world’s largest business networking and knowledge-sharing platforms for airport stakeholders, will have 7000+ visitors from over 30 countries.

May Ismail, Event Manager at RX Middle East, organizers of the Airport Show, remarked: “From any angle, today’s airports are not like the yore. They are complex passenger-driven commercial hubs now grappling with incompatible infrastructure and unsatisfactory passenger facilities. The airports are getting redesigned and services refined to meet the fast-evolving passenger experience. Besides providing a ‘sense of place’, radical renovations are helping airports improve design and usability.

“From any angle, today’s airports are not like those of the past. They have evolved into complex, passenger-driven commercial hubs now grappling with incompatible infrastructure and unsatisfactory passenger facilities. Airports are being redesigned and services refined to meet the fast-evolving expectations of the passenger experience. Besides providing a ‘sense of place’, radical renovations are helping airports improve design and usability.”

The emerging airport model calls for seamless integration of advanced technologies for more efficient operations and improved experiences for the passengers. By 2030, airport terminals will be defined by flexible infrastructure and seamless integration of advanced technologies with eco-friendly practices for more efficient operations and an improved passenger experience.

GSE innovations are focused on sustainability and automation, driven by electric, IoT-enabled, and autonomous technologies. The GSE market size is set to grow to US$19.77 billion by 2034. Currently, the GSE innovations are focused on sustainability and automation, driven by electric, IoT-enabled, and autonomous technologies. Airports are transitioning to electric GSE (e-GSE) to reduce emissions, AI-driven autonomous tractors, enhanced safety systems (anti-collision), and IoT for predictive maintenance.

There is a widespread adoption of electric baggage tractors, belt loaders, and passenger steps. Self-driving tow tractors and baggage vehicles are reducing human error and boosting efficiency on the apron. Solar-powered IoT devices are being used for real-time tracking, asset management, and predictive maintenance to reduce downtime. AI-powered vehicles with robotic arms are being used for automatic cargo loading/unloading during challenging weather conditions. High-tech GSE tunnels are being built for safer, more efficient airside transport.

For connectivity, airports are transitioning to fibre-based, high-speed networks and private 5G. AI, automation, and robotics are now the backbone of the intelligent airport. Automated gates and smart baggage systems have paved the way for the ‘smart airport’ and ‘self-service’ concept.

There is a widespread adoption of IoT, RFID, and Bluetooth technology.

Guided by the vision and continued support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the nation continues to advance wildlife conservation and environmental protection through an integrated system of institutions and initiatives that combine the preservation of national heritage with modern scientific and environmental practices.

These efforts are rooted in the legacy of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who made environmental and wildlife protection a cornerstone of the nation’s development. Inspired by this vision, the Sheikh Zayed Falcon Release Programme (SZFRP) was established to return wild falcons to their natural habitats and reinforce their role in maintaining ecological balance. The programme reflects the principle that preserving heritage is closely linked to protecting the environment from which it emerged.

Since its establishment in 1995, the programme has released over 2,400 Saker and Peregrine falcons into their natural habitats across Central Asia and along Peregrine migratory routes towards Siberia. This achievement reflects the UAE’s long-standing commitment to wildlife conservation and to promoting more sustainable and responsible falconry practices.

The UAE’s efforts extend beyond releasing falcons into the wild. They also include supporting captive-breeding programmes and encouraging their use in sustainable hunting, helping to reduce pressure on wild populations while preserving falconry as an important cultural heritage based on awareness and responsibility. In this context, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan established the Mohamed bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund, which plays a pivotal role in protecting raptors and their natural habitats. In Mongolia, the Fund’s artificial nest project contributes between 2,000 and 3,000 falcons annually, while other initiatives have helped protect an estimated 18,000 birds of prey each year, including approximately 4,000 Saker falcons, by reducing the risk of electrocution on power transmission lines.

His Highness’s vision has also helped transform falconry from a traditional practice into a sustainable model that balances heritage preservation with environmental stewardship. This approach is built on awareness and education, the use of captive-bred falcon, and the regulation of their trade in accordance with scientific and veterinary standards that support species conservation and the sustainability of the practice.

The Mohamed bin Zayed School of Falconry and Desert Lore was established as an educational and cultural platform to pass on the knowledge and values of falconry to new generations, while fostering respect for the environment and wildlife. The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) represents another example of this vision. It has become one of the world’s leading institutions specialising in Houbara breeding and conservation, with annual production approaching 100,000 birds, supporting release programmes in the wild and sustainable hunting practices.

His Excellency Mohamed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAD and the Mohamed bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund, said: “The programme demonstrates that preserving heritage extends beyond celebrating it. It also means developing it in ways that align with environmental and ethical values. It reinforces our responsibility towards nature and presents a UAE model that combines the preservation of heritage with the protection of wildlife and its sustainability for future generations.”

His Excellency commended the partnership between EAD, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the Mohamed bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund, the International Fund for Houbara Conservation, and the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH), with the support of the Presidential Court and the Embassy of the UAE in the Republic of Kazakhstan. He affirmed that this collaboration has been a key factor in the programme’s success.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Forestry and Wildlife Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the relevant authorities there for their role in facilitating the implementation of the programme and supporting its field operations.

This year, the programme continued in Kazakhstan for the eighteenth consecutive year, with 49 Saker and Peregrine falcons released in diverse natural areas that include plains and highlands within Saker falcon habitats and along the seasonal migration routes of Peregrine falcons heading towards Siberia.

Twenty falcons were fitted with satellite-tracking devices, including models that proved effective in previous years and newer, lighter models, to collect scientific data on survival rates, dispersal, and migration routes. This information will contribute to the continued development of rehabilitation and release methods. All falcons were also fitted with electronic microchips and identification rings to enable monitoring in accordance with the highest scientific standards.

The programme reflects a comprehensive vision that extends beyond the protection of falcons and Houbara to promote falconry as a practice that brings together respect for nature, biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of wildlife. The UAE’s approach affirms that falconry is not merely an inherited tradition, but an evolving practice founded on balance, responsibility and a commitment to protecting wildlife for future generations.

Although satellite-tracking devices had indicated in previous years that some falcons migrated north to breed in Siberia, this marks the first time this has been confirmed through direct field observation. Russian scientists recorded the nesting of a female Peregrine falcon and successfully monitored the successive stages of egg-laying, hatching, and the mother’s care of her chicks on the Taz Peninsula in Siberia. Identification markings confirmed that this female was among the falcons released in Kazakhstan through the programme.

This discovery is consistent with satellite-tracking data and confirms the ability of released falcons to adapt, survive, and return to suitable breeding habitats. It provides further evidence of the programme’s long-term conservation impact and highlights the importance of international cooperation in protecting falcons and other threatened species.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues to advance clean energy infrastructure projects through a comprehensive approach that places environmental protection, resource conservation and biodiversity at the heart of infrastructure development.

By embedding sustainability considerations across all project phases, DEWA reduces carbon emissions, improves resource efficiency and supports Dubai’s standing as a global model for smart and sustainable cities.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, said, “At DEWA, we draw our inspiration for environmental protection and sustainability enhancement from the directives of our wise leadership, whose vision has established the UAE as a global model in climate action, sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources for future generations. We are advancing the objectives of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 by delivering transformative energy projects that support Dubai’s goal of providing 100% of its total power production capacity from clean sources by 2050.

“In doing so, we adhere to the highest standards of efficiency, reliability and sustainability. Our projects reaffirm that developing future infrastructure is driven by a comprehensive vision that accounts for environmental protection, resource preservation and biodiversity enhancement, aligning with the UAE’s sustainability legacy and Dubai’s ambition to build a greener, more resilient and prosperous future.”

One of DEWA’s flagship clean energy initiatives is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world’s largest single-site solar park developed under the independent power producer model.

The solar park currently has a capacity of 3,860 megawatts (MW) and is expected to exceed 8,000 MW by 2030, surpassing its initial target of 5,000 MW. This expansion is projected to increase the share of clean energy in Dubai’s energy mix to 36%, up from the original goal of 25%. Another milestone is the Hatta hydroelectric power plant, the GCC’s first pumped-storage hydroelectric project, with a production capacity of 250 megawatts (MW), a storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours and a lifespan of up to 80 years. Together, these projects strengthen energy security, reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Sustainability is embedded across the planning, design, construction and operation of DEWA projects. Environmental Impact Assessments help identify potential impacts, support regulatory compliance and integrate sustainability principles from the outset, with findings incorporated into environmental management

plans. Environmental monitoring programmes regularly assess air, water and soil quality, and noise levels, enabling DEWA to take corrective action and drive continuous improvement.

Resource efficiency and waste management are equally important elements of DEWA’s sustainability strategy. Guided by circular economy principles, projects focus on rationalising resource use, minimising waste generation and promoting reuse, recycling and material recovery in line with recognised environmental standards.

These efforts are supported by an integrated framework that includes environmental inspections, audits, performance indicators, reporting systems and employee awareness programmes. This approach strengthens compliance, supports continuous improvement and helps balance economic development with environmental stewardship.

Clean energy projects in areas with unique natural characteristics require particular attention. Hatta demonstrates how clean energy development can be balanced with environmental preservation.

DEWA’s pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Hatta supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy while strengthening energy storage capabilities and supporting sustainable regional development.

DEWA’s environmental commitment extends beyond infrastructure projects to community initiatives aimed at protecting Dubai’s biodiversity and strengthening environmental awareness.

These programmes support the conservation of terrestrial and marine habitats while encouraging community participation in sustainability efforts. Mangrove trees are a key focus due to their ability to protect coastlines, improve marine ecosystems, provide wildlife habitats and absorb carbon emissions.

Working with environmental and community partners, DEWA contributes to national initiatives that expand mangrove forests, preserve marine ecosystems and reduce pollution. In 2026, DEWA organised mangrove-planting and beach-cleaning campaigns at Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, involving 254 volunteers who planted 700 mangrove trees and contributed 508 volunteer hours.

Between 2023 and 2026, DEWA planted 14,650 mangrove trees at the sanctuary. Over the same period, DEWA’s beach clean-ups removed 3,546 kilograms of waste, largely plastic materials, with the participation of 2,154 volunteers.

As the global drive for practical solutions to challenges related to water, food, energy and resources accelerates, innovation ecosystems are playing an increasingly important role in translating research and development into real-world applications and connecting emerging technologies with the needs of industry and markets.

Sharjah stands at the forefront of this drive, led by the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI Park), which has created an ecosystem that brings together research and development, technology, entrepreneurship, investment and industry, creating pathways for solutions to be developed, tested and transformed into scalable projects.

This approach positions sustainability not only as an environmental imperative, but also as an opportunity for innovation, business development and investment, particularly in sectors where environmental challenges are driving demand for more efficient technologies.

From Innovation to Real-World Application

Sharjah’s innovation ecosystem is home to a growing range of technologies being developed and tested across mobility, infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, construction and digital technologies.

Among these is uSky Transport’s suspended transport system, which offers a new approach to future mobility and infrastructure. The ecosystem also encompasses innovative projects in conductive concrete and green hydrogen.

Another example is Maxbyte, which is deploying artificial intelligence, robotics and digital technologies to support industrial transformation, improve productivity and advance more sustainable manufacturing practices.

The ecosystem also includes projects in digital infrastructure and data centres, as well as advanced construction technologies, including a 3D-printed house, demonstrating the potential of additive manufacturing in the built environment.

Alongside these projects, innovation in food security and agriculture, water management, clean energy, the circular economy and environmental technologies is generating opportunities for technology companies, investors and emerging ventures.

These include precision agriculture and AI-enabled farming, smart water management and reuse, emissions-reduction technologies, renewable energy, hydrogen, energy storage and circular economy solutions that recover and transform resources into new value.

Lab to Market

Moving from the laboratory to the market remains one of the key challenges facing emerging technologies. Innovations need environments where they can be tested, partners capable of deploying them, and investors able to support their growth.

An integrated ecosystem bringing together researchers, innovators, startups, industry, investors and government entities can create clearer pathways for collaboration, technology transfer and pilot projects.

For startups, such an environment provides access to potential partners and customers while enabling them to validate their technologies. Industry gains opportunities to test new solutions against real operational challenges, while investors gain greater visibility into technologies and companies with growth potential.

In this model, technology can move beyond a prototype or research outcome to become a solution tested in real-world conditions, refined through practical application and prepared for wider markets.

Water, Food and Energy

Water, food and energy are among the sectors where sustainability, innovation and economic opportunity increasingly intersect.

In agriculture and food security, artificial intelligence, sensing, automation and data-driven technologies are enabling more efficient use of resources and improved productivity.

In water, advanced treatment, desalination, smart management, reuse and resource recovery technologies are creating opportunities for more sustainable solutions while strengthening the connection between research and the needs of utilities and industry.

In energy, opportunities are expanding across renewable energy, storage, hydrogen, energy management and smart infrastructure, supporting the transition towards more efficient systems.

The circular economy represents another area where technology and commercial opportunity converge. Solutions that reduce waste, extend the use of resources, support recycling and recover value from waste streams can improve efficiency and reduce costs while creating new business models.

Where Challenges Meet Solutions

The strength of an innovation ecosystem lies in connecting different players across the innovation value chain. An industrial company may have a challenge requiring a technological solution, while a researcher or startup may have the technology to address it. Both need an environment where the solution can be tested, refined and demonstrated.

At the same time, investors are seeking technologies with genuine growth potential, while startups need customers, partners, funding and access to markets.

This creates a bridge between knowledge, technology, industry and capital, transforming collaboration into practical projects, products and commercial opportunities.

Sharjah Next – Sustainability: A Vital Platform

Against this backdrop, Sharjah Next – Sustainability, set to take place on October 28 and 29, 2026, at SPARK, is positioned as a strategic platform to accelerate sustainability innovation. The two-day forum will bring together researchers, businesses, government entities, investors and technology providers to advance the localization, commercialization, piloting and deployment of scalable sustainability solutions.

The programme focuses on food security and agriculture, water, environmental solutions and the circular economy, clean energy and energy efficiency, sustainable innovation financing and emerging technologies.

Beyond dialogue and knowledge exchange, the platform aims to connect companies, researchers, government entities and investors and explore opportunities for technology transfer, pilot projects, collaboration and investment.

Events such as Sharjah Next form part of a wider drive to strengthen Sharjah’s position as an attractive environment for technology companies, innovators, researchers and investors, supported by access to knowledge, talent, universities, industry, government and markets.

For startups, the ecosystem provides a pathway from technology development and validation to customers and investors. Industry gains access to technologies capable of addressing efficiency and sustainability challenges, while investors can identify companies operating in sectors with strong growth potential. Researchers, meanwhile, gain new pathways to translate research outcomes into applications with economic and societal impact.

Ultimately, the success of sustainability innovation is measured not simply by the number of ideas or technologies developed, but by their ability to move beyond the laboratory, demonstrate their value in real-world environments, enter the market and scale to deliver measurable impact.

Through these initiatives, Sharjah is strengthening an ecosystem connecting research, technology, entrepreneurship, investment and industry, creating opportunities for a new generation of solutions that can contribute to a more efficient, sustainable and future-ready economy.

The Al-Wohoosh Desert Reserve in Dubai stands as a prime example that the ecological value of protected areas is not determined by size, but by the habitats and wild species they shelter, which contribute to the overall sustainability of ecosystems.

The reserve’s name is deeply rooted in local wildlife, which flourished in the region in ancient times, before evolving into a modern nature reserve that embodies Dubai’s commitment to protecting desert ecosystems and preserving biodiversity.

Located in the Al Aweer area and spanning 15.06 square kilometres, the reserve derives its name, “Al-Wohoosh” (meaning wild beasts), from the moniker given by local inhabitants in past eras due to the predatory animals that once roamed the area. Today, it remains a testament to the rich natural heritage characteristic of the UAE’s desert environment.

Ahmed Mohammed Bin Thani, Director General of the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA), told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that nature reserves, regardless of their size, play a pivotal role in preserving the emirate’s natural capital. He noted that the Al Al-Wohoosh Desert Reserve reflects the importance of safeguarding natural environments of high ecological value, emphasizing that every natural habitat represents an essential link in the biodiversity chain. He added that the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority continues to manage and conserve these habitats according to international best scientific practices, enhancing their sustainability and supporting Dubai’s environmental and climate targets.

Despite its modest footprint, the reserve hosts a rich ecosystem comprising 91 species, including 49 plant species, 19 bird species, 4 mammal species, 8 reptile species, and 11 invertebrate species, making it a microcosm of the biodiversity found across Dubai’s deserts.

It features specialised natural habitats, including sand dunes, inter-dune plains, Ghaf tree woodlands, and areas covered with Rimth shrubs, all supporting numerous desert species adapted to harsh climatic conditions. Key wildlife residing in the reserve includes the Mountain Gazelle, resident and migratory birds such as the Southern Grey Shrike, Brown-necked Raven, Steppe Eagle, and Asian Desert Warbler, as well as the Egyptian Spiny-tailed Lizard, a prominent native desert species.

DECCA conducts specialised research programmes and scientific studies within the reserve to better understand the components of the desert ecosystem, monitor wild species, and track habitat conditions.

These initiatives inform management plans and maintain ecological balance on a sustainable scientific basis. Furthermore, the authority actively promotes environmental awareness through educational programmes, school visits, and community initiatives, enabling the public to appreciate the ecological significance of nature reserves and fostering a culture of conservation across all segments of society.

Following last week’s unveiling of the Aircrafted Arsenal Crest, Emirates is taking viewers behind the scenes to showcase the engineering expertise, craftsmanship and precision that went into the creation of the 2.4-meter illuminated sculpture.

Designed and built entirely in-house by Emirates Engineering teams, the Crest was brought to life by a team of 15 experts in just 34 days. Watch how the team clean, cut, curve, machine, rivet, assemble and paint aviation materials into one of the most recognisable emblems in football.

Once built, the sculpture began its final journey to Emirates Stadium. Carefully packaged in a custom-built, protective crate, the Aircrafted Arsenal Crest was handed over to the experts at Emirates SkyCargo, to be loaded into a freighter departing Dubai for London Stansted. With decades of experience in handling everything from specialised technology through to ancient artifacts, the airline’s cargo arm ensured this one-of-a-kind installation was handled with care at every touchpoint.

Beyond transporting the Crest, aircraft components from cargo operations were used in the build itself, including cargo tracks, floor panels and roller components to help structure and shape the iconic emblem.

The Making Of video captures the people, processes and aviation expertise behind this project, and offers a closer look at how Emirates brought together expertise across its operations to create this tribute to one of its longest-standing partnerships.

The Emirates and Arsenal partnership first began in 2006, and has recently been extended through to 2033. As the partners enter the next chapter of their partnership, Emirates will continue as Arsenal’s front-of-shirt, training kit and stadium naming rights partner.
