The Emirates Group has been recognised for the second time with the UAE’s highest accolade in sustainable business impact, the Platinum Impact Seal Award for 2025-2027 from the UAE National CSR Fund, Majra.

The award was presented by His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Majra, to Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer, Adel Al Redha, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court.

The Impact Seal – Platinum Tier is the UAE’s highest federal recognition for organisations that have demonstrated outstanding performance and measurable impact across environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. It follows a comprehensive assessment against Majra’s evaluation metrics, spanning an organisation’s CSR initiatives, sustainability practices, governance, and overall impact, alongside its alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and UAE national priorities.

Adel Al Redha said: “The Emirates Group is proud to be recognised with the Platinum Impact Seal for the second consecutive cycle, and this award reaffirms and demonstrates our continued commitment to advancing sustainability and introducing innovative practices across our businesses. We recognise our responsibility to support and participate in solutions that contribute to the aviation’s environmental challenges, therefore we continue to focus on making progress and taking an active role where we can have a positive outcome: through practical environmental practices and projects, support for our communities, sound governance, and partnerships across our ecosystem aimed at practical solutions, in line with the UAE’s national priorities.”

The Emirates Group’s Environmental Sustainability Framework is built on three pillars: reducing emissions, consuming responsibly, and preserving wildlife and habitats. Across these pillars, the Group strives to deliver value to people, communities and economies while aiming to continuously improve its environmental performance. Some initiatives over the last year include:

Green Ops: The airline continues implementing its operational fuel efficiency programme, first established in 2016, to reduce fuel consumption and emissions through pilot training, data analytics, optimised flight routings, reducing engine taxiing, among others. In 2024–25, these initiatives saved over 98,000 tonnes of fuel and cut carbon emissions by more than 312,000 tonnes while maintaining safety.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): In 2025-2026, Emirates procured over 28,000 tonnes of SAF, leading to further reduction in emissions by more than 93,000 tonnes. The airline also signed an MoU with ENOC Group to explore and develop joint initiatives for the supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to Emirates at its Dubai hub.

Upcycling materials from the world’s largest retrofit programme: Fabrics and parts salvaged from the airline’s retrofit programme have been upcycled into limited-edition luggage pieces, with proceeds supporting the Emirates Airline Foundation. In 2025, the airline launched the Aircrafted KIDS programme and has so far donated around 4,000 upcycled school bags to children’s organisations across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Repurposing plastic: The airline continued its closed-loop recycling initiative for inflight meal service items, which have so far repurposed over 88,000 kilograms of damaged or unserviceable items into new products for use onboard.

Clean energy: In October 2024, Emirates partnered with Etihad Clean Energy Development to install nearly 40,000 solar panels at Emirates Engineering Centre, supplying 37% of the facility’s energy and reducing annual CO₂e emissions by over 13,000 tonnes.

Emirates Flight Catering (EKFC) biodigester: EKFC, the world’s largest flight catering facility, commissioned a large-scale, custom-built biodigester to enable on-site processing of organic waste. At full capacity, the biodigester is estimated to avoid more than 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Fleet transformation: dnata is steadily replacing diesel-powered ground support equipment with hybrid, electric and, in the future, hydrogen-powered alternatives. As a result of its investments in recent years, more than 17% of its global fleet is now electrified.

Alternative fuel adoption: dnata supports the use of lower-carbon fuels, including biodiesel, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and other emerging fuel alternatives. In the financial year 2025–26, dnata increased its global consumption of alternative fuels by 89% year-on-year. This progress builds on a landmark achievement in the UAE in 2024, when dnata transitioned all non-electric airside vehicles in Dubai to biodiesel, reducing CO₂-equivalent emissions by more than 3,500 tonnes annually.

Investment in renewable energy: dnata continues to invest in renewable energy across its facilities, including the installation of solar photovoltaic systems and the adoption of renewable electricity tariffs. In the financial year 2025–26, its onsite solar systems generated 5,126 MWh of electricity, while a further 24,564 MWh was sourced through renewable energy tariffs globally. As a result, renewables accounted for 15% of dnata’s total energy consumption.

Waste reduction and resource efficiency: dnata is focused on reducing material consumption and waste, increasing recycling and reuse, and advancing circular solutions across its operations. In the financial year 2025–26, 47% of waste generated across dnata’s global operations was diverted from disposal.

This year’s ceremony also marked the launch of the UAE Companies for Good 2031 Strategy, a national framework designed to strengthen private sector contributions to advance the UAE’s Impact Economy and further enhance the country’s CSR, ESG and sustainability ecosystem.

Expo City Dubai has issued the first Expo Green Licences to six businesses, ranging from small-sized social enterprises to multinational organisations, as the city builds momentum in its role as the UAE’s first Green Innovation District.

A pioneering product from Expo City Dubai, the Expo Green Licence is a key enabler of the Green Innovation District – a joint, landmark initiative with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism designed to connect businesses under a shared goal of driving sustainable innovation to maximise environmental and economic impact.

The six ventures – whose activities span waste management to climate tech – are the first of a robust pipeline of applicants from the UAE and abroad to be awarded the licence, reinforcing the nation as a destination of choice for bold, innovative enterprises committed to sustainable development.

The Expo Green Licence is the first of its kind in the UAE and addresses a critical gap in the licensing market by offering sustainability-led businesses of all sizes, stages and sectors exclusive benefits that support setup, growth and innovation. It sets a clear and robust qualification benchmark, ensuring only businesses with demonstrated environmental, social and governance credentials – through certifications or documented track records – form part of the District.

Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and CEO of Expo City Dubai Authority, said, “Attracting, enabling and scaling sustainability-focused business, innovation and talent is integral to the Green Innovation District’s mission to deliver measurable environmental, economic and social impact and directly aligns with an enhanced nationwide focus on strengthening local industry.

“We are proud to advance the District’s mission as we grant the first green licences – entrusted to these pioneering organisations that now form part of a collaborative, solutions-driven ecosystem that will contribute to UAE’s net zero and economic diversification ambitions, helping to create a brighter future for generations to come.”

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, said that the UAE has made great strides in developing an integrated national system to promote the transition towards a circular economy model and enable the growth and competitiveness of sustainable and advanced industries.

“As we work to advance the UAE’s long-term economic and climate ambitions, the Expo Green Licence is a powerful tool to encourage innovation and support green business growth. The companies receiving their licence today are frontrunners in the ongoing evolution of the Green Innovation District, and we look forward to welcoming more innovative organisations that will drive the objectives of the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision to diversify the national economy, accelerate the transition to clean energy sources, and enhance the country’s competitiveness in the areas of sustainability and environmental innovation,” he added.

Presented with their licences by Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri and Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, Executive Director, Expo City Dubai Authority, were AirJoule, a climate tech company with an innovative atmospheric water harvesting system, and Dubai-based e-waste management company WAT (We Are Tech), which helps organisations responsibly dispose of, recycle, refurbish and repurpose old electronics and IT equipment while protecting sensitive data.

Polygreen – a global circular economy leader delivering innovative environmental, recycling, reusability and waste management solutions – was also among the first cohort of licensees.

They join businesses with an established history at Expo City, including Carbon Assurance, the first UAE-established body accredited by the Emirates International Accreditation Centre (EIAC) to conduct greenhouse gas validation and verification and Carbon Standard, which helps governments and businesses set sustainability targets, develop emission reduction strategies, and measure, verify and report their environmental progress.

RBT Collective, a long-term partner in Expo City’s food rescue programme Terrazo that works with organisations and communities to reimagine food systems, reduce waste and advance sustainable, circular economy solutions, has also been granted the Expo Green Licence.

The Expo Green Licence is a crucial part of the Green Innovation District, which enables sustainable businesses to set up, innovate and grow. The District combines Expo City’s ready-built sustainable infrastructure and testbed facilities with specialised light manufacturing and R&D facilities to deliver measurable climate, economic and social impact. Supported by a curated network of partners and subject-matter experts, it builds capacity and facilitates funding as it seeks to co-develop and deploy climate-aligned, circular economy and clean technology solutions.

The Expo Green Licence offers two distinct pathways to qualification. While more established companies demonstrating valid recognised ESG ratings or equivalent from accredited agencies benefit from direct qualification, Expo City’s inclusive process equally ensures small, growing organisations have the opportunity to be considered through an evidence-based methodology.

In the latter, small and medium-sized enterprises must offer scalable products or services directly associated with sustainable climate action, sustainability initiatives, energy and water efficiency or circular economy. Expo City’s in-house sustainability experts then evaluate each business individually to determine its eligibility.

This first-of-its-kind licensing product offers a comprehensive support package with benefits valued at upwards of AED400,000, covering discounted setup fees, sustainability services, engagement and promotion support and collaboration opportunities.

The licence also facilitates growth through local and international business mission invitations via the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, as well as collaboration opportunities with MAJRA, the UAE’s national platform supporting sustainability-driven businesses and initiatives.

Today, EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), a leading company in the integrated coordination of planning, purchasing, supply, and system despatch services for water and electricity across the UAE, announced that registration for its 20th Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction is open.

Since the introduction of the Regulatory Policy for CECs by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) in 2021, the CEC programme has become an established component of the Emirate’s energy transition framework. CECs are attracting robust interest across healthcare, industrial, retail, energy, real estate, events, and commercial sectors, with businesses and organisations keen to secure a strong competitive advantage.

EWEC plays a central role in enabling and operating the CEC market, as the Single Registrant and Scheme Operator. In addition, as EWEC executes its strategic roadmap to expand renewable energy capacity, with solar generation forecast to reach 17.5 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and exceed 30GW by 2035, this rapidly expanding pipeline directly enables a broader spectrum of entities to acquire certificates and formally verify their renewable energy consumption.

Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Assets Officer of EWEC, said: “As EWEC continues to deliver world-leading renewable energy mega-projects, we are unlocking new opportunities for organisations to actively participate in the energy transition. The continuous growth of our renewable energy portfolio means we can supply CECs at an unprecedented scale, ensuring the barriers to acquiring verified clean energy remain exceptionally low. Reaching our 20th auction is a testament to the robust, cross-sector demand for verified climate action. We invite organisations of all sizes to capitalise on this expanding capacity and integrate this strategic mechanism into their broader decarbonisation strategies.”

To ensure maximum accessibility, EWEC maintains highly competitive reserve prices for each energy source, lowering the barriers to entry for both auction participation and direct transactions with EWEC. The reserve prices for each type of certificate, solar, nuclear and wind, are shared as a part of the auction registration process.

Each certificate represents the environmental attributes of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable or clean energy and conforms to the internationally recognised International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard (I-REC Standard). Today, CECs remain the only accredited mechanism in Abu Dhabi that verifies electricity consumption from clean energy sources, enabling organisations to formally certify their clean energy use and make measurable progress towards their sustainability targets.

Registration for EWEC’s 20th Clean Energy Certificates auction is now open and will close on 31 July 2026. The auction uses a competitive “Pay as Bid” clearing mechanism, enabling participants to bid for their clean energy allocation, with results expected by 5 August 2026.

Organisations ready to gain a sustainable competitive edge and demonstrate verified environmental leadership are encouraged to participate. To register, please visit www.ewec.ae/cleanenergycertificates or contact EWEC’s Clean Energy Certificates team at CleanEnergyCertificates@ewec.ae.

Dubai Municipality has approved Dubox’s Modular Construction System as part of its newly approved building systems, reinforcing its ongoing efforts to promote advanced and sustainable construction technologies. The approval supports the adoption of innovative building solutions that enhance construction efficiency, accelerate project delivery, and improve the quality of buildings and public facilities.

A delegation from Dubai Municipality, led by Eng. Maryam Al Muhairi, CEO of the Building Regulation and Permits Agency, conducted a site visit to the company’s manufacturing facility, operated by AMANA Group in Dubai Industrial City. The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration with the private sector and reaffirm Dubai Municipality’s commitment to supporting and advancing modern construction methodologies.

During the visit, the delegation reviewed the modular construction process, through which building units are manufactured within a controlled factory environment in accordance with the highest quality standards before being transported and assembled on-site within significantly shorter timeframes. This approach helps reduce waste, minimise environmental impact, and improve resource efficiency.

The company also showcased the different types of buildings it manufactures, its ongoing projects, future development plans, and several challenges associated with expanding the adoption of modern construction methods across the sector.

Eng. Maryam Al Muhairi, CEO of the Building Regulation and Permits Agency at Dubai Municipality, said: “Dubai Municipality is committed to fostering a competitive and attractive business environment within the construction sector by encouraging the wider adoption of advanced building technologies and modern construction methods. We are also providing the necessary support to facilitate the use of modular construction in the development of housing projects for Emirati citizens, an approach that has the potential to reduce the overall cost of these projects.”

The company also presented the progress of the modular buildings being manufactured for Dubai Municipality’s “Work from Park” initiative, which launched with Al Barsha Pond Park and aims to provide interactive and flexible workspaces within public parks.

Masdar, a global clean energy leader, today formally broke ground on its 1-gigawatt (GW) wind farm in the Zhambyl region of Kazakhstan.

The wind farm is Masdar’s first renewable energy development in Kazakhstan and one of the largest integrated wind and battery storage projects in Central Asia, representing investment of US$1.4 billion. It features a 600-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) to support grid stability. The project is being led by Masdar, and co-developed with W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, a Samruk-Kazyna Fund company, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund.

The milestone ceremony was attended by senior government officials and representatives from the UAE and Kazakhstan, highlighting the strong partnership between the two nations in advancing sustainable development and clean energy deployment.

Once completed, the project will generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 880,000 homes in southern Kazakhstan, while avoiding around 2.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. In addition, the project will enhance grid infrastructure in southern Kazakhstan through the construction of more than 400 km of overhead transmission lines.

Masdar also signed a roadmap agreement with the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development to advance Kazakhstan’s first Round-the-Clock (RTC) clean energy project, capable of providing utility-scale clean energy 24/7. Aligned with the country’s AI ambitions, the proposed initial phase will provide up to 200MW of baseload power for data centres and AI infrastructure. The roadmap agreement provides the foundation for the project’s development, including site identification, technical assessment, and stakeholder alignment.

Nurlan Zhakupov, Chief Executive Officer of Samruk-Kazyna, said:

We are proud to launch this landmark project together with Masdar, marking an important milestone in our strategic partnership. The 1GW wind farm opens a new chapter in the cooperation between Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates and reflects our shared commitment to advancing a low-carbon economy, deploying innovative technologies and building a sustainable energy future for Kazakhstan.

HE Yerlan Akkenzhenov, Kazakhstan Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said:

Our partnership with Masdar drives renewable energy development and propels Kazakhstan toward carbon neutrality. This project will strengthen regional energy security and bring cutting-edge technologies to the renewable energy sector. We appreciate our partners’ commitment to investing in the country’s sustainable development and will provide all the necessary support to ensure the successful delivery of every project phase.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, said:

This project represents a significant step forward in Masdar’s global expansion and our growing presence in Central Asia. As our first project in Kazakhstan, it bolsters our leading position in the region and reflects our commitment to enhancing the country’s long-term growth and energy security. We are also delighted to sign a roadmap agreement to expand the deployment of Round-the-Clock renewable energy solution in Kazakhstan, helping to provide the industries of the future with the reliable, affordable, clean power that they need.

Engineer Hamad Al Ameri, Managing Director and Group CEO of Alpha Dhabi Holding, said:

This groundbreaking marks another milestone in Alpha Dhabi’s strategy to position climate investment as a core driver of sustainable growth. Through our partnership with Masdar and our subsidiary W Solar, we are demonstrating that the UAE’s leadership in clean energy extends far beyond our borders; mobilizing capital, expertise, and long-term commitment to markets where the energy transition is accelerating. The wind project, combined with a battery energy storage system in the Zhambyl region, reflects our belief that patient, purpose-driven investment in clean infrastructure is the defining opportunity of our era and essential for long-term value creation.

The proposed Kazakhstan RTC project builds on Masdar’s leadership in round-the-clock renewable energy solutions. In October 2025 the company broke ground in Abu Dhabi on its first 24/7 gigascale solar and battery storage project. The project will feature a 5.2GW (DC) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, coupled with a 19-gigawatt-hour (GWh) BESS to deliver up to 1GW baseload power every day, the largest combined solar and BESS project in the world.

The projects will support Kazakhstan in achieving its clean energy objectives, and strengthen Masdar’s footprint in Central Asia, where it is already present in several countries. They will also contribute to the company’s target of reaching 100GW of global portfolio capacity by 2030.

Kazakhstan has set ambitious targets to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix, with a goal of reaching 15 percent electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and 50 percent by 2050. The Zhambyl project will play a key role in supporting these objectives, while strengthening Kazakhstan’s long-term growth, energy security and sustainable economic development.
