The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) proudly concluded the 21st Cycle of the Environmental Drawing Competition (EDC) and the 3rd Cycle of Art from Waste (AfW) Competition with a distinguished awarding ceremony held at The Ismaili Centre Dubai. The event brought together students, educators, dignitaries, corporate representatives, jury members and families to celebrate the remarkable creativity and environmental awareness demonstrated by young participants from across the nation.

This year’s editions witnessed exceptional participation from schools representing all seven Emirates, including institutions supporting students of determination. A total of 611 government and private schools registered for the Environmental Drawing Competition, while 361 schools participated in the Art from Waste initiative, reflecting the growing importance of sustainability education and environmental engagement among the youth of the UAE.

For more than two decades, EEG’s Environmental Drawing Competition has served as a pioneering educational platform that empowers students to explore environmental challenges through artistic expression. The initiative encourages young minds to think critically, creatively and compassionately about the future of the planet while strengthening their understanding of sustainability issues.

The 2026 Environmental Drawing Competition featured three compelling themes tailored to different age groups:

Ages 6 – 8: Saving the Icy Homes of My Polar Friends

Ages 9 – 11: Rivers & Lakes: Lifelines of Our Planet

Ages 12 – 14: Fast Forward –Imagine Earth in the Year 2075

Through these thought-provoking themes, students explored urgent environmental concerns including climate change, freshwater conservation and the future of life on Earth. The submissions reflected not only artistic excellence, but also a deep sense of environmental responsibility, innovation and hope for a sustainable future.

Alongside EDC, EEG also celebrated the success of the 3rd Cycle of Art from Waste — an initiative designed to encourage students to rethink waste and embrace the principles of recycling, upcycling and circular economy practices through practical creativity.

This year’s competition challenged students to develop innovative and purposeful creations under the following themes:

Group Age 9 – 11: A Three-Seater Garden Bench

Group Age 12 – 14: Solar Street Lamp: Lighting Pathways

Group Age 15 – 17: Harnessing the Wind: Building a Windmill

The competition showcased the incredible ability of students to transform discarded materials into functional and artistic creations, reinforcing the message that waste can become a valuable resource when approached with creativity and environmental consciousness.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-Founder and Chairperson of EEG, stated:

“Today’s gathering is far more than a celebration of artistic talent and creativity; it is a reflection of a generation that is deeply aware of its surroundings and responsibility towards protecting our planet. Through every drawing, every innovative creation and every thoughtful idea presented, our students have demonstrated the power of art as a voice for environmental stewardship and sustainable living.”

Dr. Habiba Al Mar’ashi further remarked, “Since the inception of Emirates Environmental Group, we have taken immense pride in nurturing environmentally conscious young minds and grooming future generations to become compassionate leaders, responsible citizens and true ambassadors of sustainability”; she added, “through meaningful educational platforms such as these, we aim to inspire creativity, critical thinking and a lifelong commitment towards protecting our planet and preserving its precious resources for generations to come.”

She also expressed her sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and Sharjah Private Education Authority for their continued support in encouraging widespread participation across schools in the UAE; she further extended heartfelt gratitude to The Ismaili Centre Dubai for graciously hosting the awarding ceremony, as well as to Almarai, Dabur, Delmonte, HP and L’Oréal for their generous contribution towards recognising and celebrating the achievements of the young participants.

Submissions were reviewed by a distinguished panel of experts:

Bahia Shehab, Senior Specialist in Student Skills Development, Counseling and Future Skills Management, Ministry of Education

Najat Makki, Visual Artist, Member of Dubai Cultural Council

Pari Sagar, Artist

The awarding ceremony was divided into two parts; the first one was for the winning students in in the 21st Cycle of Environmental Drawing Competition under each theme:

Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), has said that the UAE has become an important global actor in advancing renewable energy and international energy cooperation. This has been achieved through major investments in solar, storage technologies and energy infrastructure, the UAE has shown that energy-producing nations can help advance the energy transition globally.

In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), La Camera said that as host country of IRENA, the UAE has consistently supported international dialogue and collaboration on renewable energy. “It has also helped mobilise financing and partnerships for clean energy deployment in emerging and developing economies. Importantly, the UAE has helped shift the global debate from whether renewables can scale, to how quickly countries can accelerate deployment.”

Domestically, he added, the UAE continues to expand renewable energy capacity while investing in areas such as green hydrogen and low-carbon industry. “Best example is the Al Dhafra Round-The-Clock project by Masdar in Abu Dhabi that combines solar with a massive amount of battery capacity.

“This 24/7 renewable project is a global blueprint for the continuous and reliable supply of renewable energy,” he noted.

La Camera has said that the 31st Council meeting of IRENA highlighted that the global energy transition is entering a new phase of the global energy transition with strategic priorities of member states focusing on energy security and economic competitiveness.

“Member countries reaffirmed the need to accelerate renewable energy deployment while investing in grids, storage and infrastructure to meet rising electricity demand reliably and affordably. Discussions also focused on practical pathways to electrify end-use sectors across power, transport, industry and digitalisation,” he explained.

He further stated that a major outcome was stronger alignment around implementation. “Governments exchanged experiences on scaling investment, digitalisation, infrastructure planning and regional cooperation to accelerate progress.”

La Camera added that this Council meets at critical moments in the transition when the world is facing – what some call – biggest energy crisis in history. “Geopolitical tensions, skyrocketing energy demand and fossil fuels volatility show our energy systems are not fit for purposes.”

“IRENA believes the next frontier of the transition is electrification. Energy demand is rising in transport, industry, buildings and digitalisation. Now the transition must focus on electrifying those end-uses. Global electrification must rise from around 20% of energy consumption today to around 35% by 2035 and over 50% by 2050,” he remarked.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)has published its 2025 Sustainability and Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) report, highlighting major achievements in shaping the future of motorsport and mobility for its diverse global community.

The FIA, the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, continued to drive progress at the intersection of innovation, inclusion, and access through 2025.

In environmental sustainability, it strengthened frameworks and tools to support Member Clubs, championships and events in managing their impact, while also taking steps to accelerate its own decarbonisation strategy.

In D&I, it continued to expand participation, strengthen career pathways, and build a more inclusive environment across motor sport and mobility.

H.E. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, said: “Our diversity is our strength. Looking ahead, our direction is clear. We will continue to innovate, strengthen frameworks, and raise standards. Together, we are shaping a future in which motorsport and mobility are not only more sustainable, but more inclusive, accessible, and truly reflective of the diverse global community we serve.”

The landmark FIA report highlighted several key environmental achievements including:

Grew the FIA’s flagship Environmental Accreditation Programme to 260+ accredited organisations (a 37% YOY increase) with a record 70 new accreditations, 33 renewals and nine upgrades.

Increased sustainability grantsby 24% to €340,000, supportingprojects on emissions reduction, biodiversity, mobility access and education.

Approved the first technical and safety regulations for liquid hydrogen- powered vehicles, marking a historic step toward low carbon competition.

Welcomed 1,000+ participants in the FIA’s Sustainable Innovation Series.

In November 2025, the FIA launched its first Sustainability Survey for its Member Clubs to better understand their priorities and challenges across different regions. Across all Member Clubs, there was strong agreement that motor sport and mobility organisations should play a leading role in advancing climate action and sustainable development.

In terms of its own operations last year, the FIA report noted the following

Maintained commitment to reduce absolute emissions by 2030.

Absolute emissions increasedby16% year-on-year against a backdrop of increased headcount and the opening of a new office in London.

Logistics-related emissions loweredby 2%, supported by HVO-powered DHL trucks across the European race calendar.

Overall impact of logistics footprint reduced by 22% through the ramp-up of investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuels.

While important progress has been made in several areas under the FIA’s direct influence, there were substantive increases elsewhere in the footprint, especially in business travel for staff and visitors attending conferences, regional meetings, and general assemblies.

The rise in the footprint does not mean progress has stopped, but reinforces the need for a more targeted response and strategy. It highlights the necessity to drive lower-carbon choices across motorsport and mobility, by encouraging better decisions on logistics, travel, events, procurement, and collaboration across the ecosystem.

Not all emissions reported are directly controlled by the FIA, and the federation’s responsibility is not only to reduce its own footprint, but also to enable others to reduce theirs.

The inaugural FIA Karting Arrive & Drive World Cup set the tone for a landmark year in diversity and inclusion, bringing together 100+ competitors from 50 nations and a record 15 female drivers on the grid.

Education For Employment-UAE (EFE-UAE), in collaboration with the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) and supported by Citi, has launched the 2026 edition of the AJYAL Program, a regional initiative designed to equip university students with the skills required to succeed in a rapidly evolving job market.

The program was introduced at AURAK through a series of sessions focused on artificial intelligence, sustainability, and employability preparation, helping students develop the competencies needed to transition from university to the workforce.

The name “AJYAL,” derived from the Arabic word for “generations,” reflects the program’s focus on empowering the next generation of talent to participate in the future economy. “This program goes beyond simply preparing young people for employment; it equips them for the future,” said Dina Dandachli, EFE-Europe CEO. “Through AJYAL’s customized training, mentorship, and AI-enabled job matching, we are removing barriers and connecting young people to opportunities that can transform their lives and communities.”

The program designed as a structured employability preparation program delivered before students begin internships, combining digital learning platforms with in person training to help young people build both technical capabilities and workplace readiness.

The initiative reflects the UAE’s growing focus on future skills, digital transformation and sustainability, as industries increasingly demand talent with expertise in emerging technologies and green economy sectors.

In this sense Shamsa Al-Falasi, CEO of Citibank N.A., UAE and Citi Country Officer & Banking Head, highlighted: “We’re pleased to partner with EFE on this initiative, which deeply resonates with the UAE’s strategic vision, prioritizing future skills, digital transformation, and sustainability. This focus is crucial as industries rapidly evolve, demanding expertise in emerging technologies and green economy sectors. Through this collaboration, we are committed to actively contributing to the country’s efforts to nurture a skilled workforce for tomorrow’s dynamic job market.”

As part of the program, students are introduced to AI and digital skills training through a digital platform, where participants complete courses covering generative AI fundamentals, responsible AI use and real world applications of artificial intelligence across industries.

The program also includes green skills training and awareness of sustainability focused career pathways. Through a dedicated session delivered with LinkedIn, students explored the rise of green jobs and the growing demand for sustainability expertise across the UAE’s evolving economy. Participants received LinkedIn Learning Premium access to continue developing skills related to sustainable development, climate action and business sustainability strategies.

The final stage of the program focused on workplace readiness and employability preparation, including job search strategies, professional communication, CV writing and interview preparation through EFE’s “Finding a Job is a Job” training workshops.

The program recently concluded, with the delivery of EFE’s “Finding a Job is a Job” (FIJIJ) workshops, engaging more than 200 students in practical employability training. The sessions focused on CV development, interview preparation, communication and workplace readiness, while also introducing students to EFE’s AI-powered career coach, designed to support job search and career development through personalized guidance.

By combining digital, green and soft skills training with practical employability preparation, the AJYAL program aims to ensure students graduate with the tools needed to succeed in today’s competitive job market.

The initiative forms part of the regional AJYAL: Future Ready Youth Employment & Skills Program, implemented across Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia over the course of two years..

The program aims to equip around700 underserved young people aged 18 to 35 in the region with market relevant digital, green and employability skills, with at least 275 participants expected to secure formal employment through AI-enabled job matching platforms.

As economies across the Gulf accelerate investment in artificial intelligence, digital transformation and sustainability, demand for future ready talent is growing rapidly. Governments and employers across the UAE and wider GCC are increasingly prioritising skills in areas such as AI, data literacy and green technologies as part of broader efforts to build knowledge-based economies. Initiatives like AJYAL play an important role in preparing the next generation of professionals with the capabilities needed to participate in these emerging sectors and support the region’s long-term economic growth.

This new grant builds on more than a decade of collaboration between the Citi Foundation and EFE, which has already helped thousands of young people access dignified and fulfilling work. By investing in low-income youth, both organisations are strongly supporting innovation, economic growth and long-term opportunity in the region.

Dubai Taxi Company PJSC (“DTC”), the leading provider of mobility services in Dubai, and its strategic partner Bolt today announced the entry of Bolt’s ride-hailing services in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant step in the partnership’s expansion across the UAE.

The expansion builds on strong e-hailing momentum across the DTC–Bolt strategic partnership. In 2025, DTC reported a 24% year-on-year increase in e-hailing activity across its taxi and limousine segments, supported by continued fleet expansion and growing customer adoption of digital booking channels.

Bolt will initially launch limousine services where customers in Abu Dhabi will be able to access ride-hailing services backed by a huge network of fleet owners, drivers, and vehicles. This will be followed by taxi services in weeks to follow.

Vasilis Hadjiaslanis, General Manager of Bolt UAE, said: “Abu Dhabi is a natural next step for Bolt in the UAE. We have seen exceptional demand for reliable, app-based mobility, and this milestone gives residents and visitors in the capital access to a service that is fast, convenient, and built around their needs. We are proud to be on this journey alongside our partners at DTC, and we look forward to continuing to grow our presence across the UAE.”

That momentum carried into Q1 2026, with e-hailing activity rising a further 9% year-on-year, reflecting the continued resilience of app-based mobility and the long-term growth potential of digital transport services in the UAE.

The expansion also relies on the partnership’s growth in Dubai, where Q1 2026 saw the integration of 1,823 National Taxi vehicles into the Bolt platform. Broadening Bolt’s UAE footprint and strengthens its role in supporting the country’s evolving ecosystem, shaping how residents, visitors, and businesses move across cities.

Driven by this high demand, Bolt expansion into Abu Dhabi reinforces DTC’s commitment to delivering more accessible mobility solutions for residents, visitors, and businesses nationwide, and support the UAE’s wider shift toward smart mobility.

A recent YouGov survey commissioned by BE WTR points to a clear shift in consumer expectations across the UAE, highlighting growing demand for higher-quality, more sustainable, and more convenient drinking water solutions. Responding to this, BE WTR, a first-of-its-kind premium water brand in the UAE, continues to set a new standard for hydration that is better for both people and the planet. Backed by Swiss-engineered filtration and bottled locally in the UAE, the brand has announced the launch of the BE WTR app, available in Dubai from May 11th as part of its first rollout phase, giving residents access to premium water at home in just a few clicks. Expansion into Abu Dhabi will follow during the second phase of the launch.

Rethinking Water Quality, Health, and Everyday Choices

Conducted between April 16th and 21st, the ‘Perceptions of Water Quality Survey’ points to a change in mindset among UAE residents around everyday hydration, with health and quality taking centre stage in daily choices. More than half of those surveyed highlighted concerns around bacteria (51%), chlorine (44%), and heavy metals (37%), shaping a more considered approach to what they and their families consume. This is reflected in how people define ‘healthy’ water, with purity (57%) leading the way, followed by mineral content (46%) and taste (42%), highlighting a clear expectation for water that is as safe as it is tasty.

While bottled water remains the most common source at 42%, sustainability is becoming just as influential as quality, with 57% of respondents considering it an important factor in their decision-making. There is also a clear willingness to invest in better options, with 34% of consumers ‘very’ or ‘extremely willing’ to pay more for premium water.

When it comes to switching brands, better quality (66%) and improved health benefits (53%) lead the way, signalling a market that is actively seeking solutions that balance wellbeing and long-term impact.

The UAE’s Best

Bottled locally in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, BE WTR uses advanced Swiss-engineered AQTiV filtration to remove chlorine, odours, microplastics, and organic impurities, eliminating 99.999% of bacteria, all while preserving essential minerals. The result is water that feels soft, balanced, and naturally fresh, delivering on the growing expectation for purity, taste, and quality without relying on distant sources.

Designed with both wellbeing and longevity in mind, BE WTR operates through a fully circular system built around high-quality extra-flint glass bottles produced in the UAE and engineered for up to 300 uses. Each one is collected, cleaned, and refilled under rigorous hygiene standards, with the brand also adhering to ESMA standards and its broader sustainability commitments, including B Corp principles, offering a more convenient and sustainable alternative to single-use formats. Already trusted by leading hospitality names across the UAE, the brand is creating a smarter, more conscious water culture, one bottle at a time.

Taste The Difference

Further expanding the experience, BE WTR will introduce its new app in Dubai as part of the brand’s first rollout phase, becoming the only water brand in the UAE to bring premium, locally filtered water straight from its source to homes through a seamless, circular delivery model. Abu Dhabi will be introduced during the second phase of expansion. With just a few taps, users can choose between still or sparkling, select their preferred bottle size, and set a delivery schedule that fits effortlessly into their routine.

The subscription-based approach removes the need for constant reordering, offering a more intuitive way to manage everyday hydration while maintaining the same quality found in leading restaurants and hotels. Water arrives in beautifully crafted glass bottles, delivered in reusable crates, with empty bottles collected during the next visit, ready to be cleaned, refilled, and returned to circulation.

Mike Hecker, CEO and Founder of BE WTR, shared, ‘At BE WTR, we believe fresh, great-tasting water should never come at the expense of the planet. We also recognise that, while the UAE clearly values health and sustainability, busy routines and family life can make everyday choices feel more complicated than they need to be. With the launch of the BE WTR app, we are removing that friction, creating a seamless, intuitive experience that keeps ultra-filtered, mineral-enhanced, plastic-free water always within easy reach.’

As BE WTR continues to shape a more conscious water culture in the UAE, the launch of the app makes sustainable, mineral-enhanced water more accessible to homes nationwide. At a time when people are paying closer attention to what they consume, BE WTR offers something simple yet lasting; water that feels better, tastes better, and fits seamlessly into modern living.

The BE WTR app will be available to download on iOS and Android from May 11th via the App Store and Google Play.

The experience draws on footage and data collected during a landmark expedition conducted by OceanX, G42, and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, working alongside NYU Abu Dhabi faculty and researchers from the University’s Mubadala Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Science (ACCESS).The mission focused on understanding biodiversity, climate adaptation, and marine resilience in UAE waters, including coral systems and shark species previously undocumented in the region.

Visitors to the portal Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi begin with a cinematic introduction to the OceanX and NYU Abu Dhabi research partnership, highlighting deep-sea exploration, coral ecosystem documentation, and species discovery. They then enter Dive and Discover UAE, an interactive 360-degree experience that allows participants to choose from seven underwater missions and pilot a virtual submersible through diverse marine environments. The experience supports Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi’s education mission by blending exploration and learning, combining UAE-focused content with insights drawn from OceanX expeditions around the world.

Powered by OceanX Education, the Portal uses immersive storytelling to translate real ocean science into meaningful learning experiences. Designed for museums, schools, and public spaces, it builds ocean literacy by allowing audiences of all ages to explore, question, and engage directly with the discoveries shaping our understanding of the ocean.

Through immersive learning and firsthand exploration, the OceanX Education Portal creates pathways for curiosity, connection, and action, helping cultivate the next generation of ocean stewards.
