Giorgio Armani launched the Acqua for life challenge in March 2011 with the objective to generate the equivalent of 40 million litres of safe drinking water for communities in Ghana.

Through Mr. Armani's promotion of the importance of having access to clean drinking water over 43,314,986 litres of safe drinking water were collected worldwide during the Acqua for Life challenge.

This was done alongside Green Cross International to raise awareness of this important issue. Making use of Acqua di Gi and Acqua di Gioia, two fragrances associated with water, Giorgio Armani has helped to establish a comprehensive network of support for this project, with a particular focus on the Internet through the use of an innovative Facebook application.

The total amount of water collected was reached as follows;

3,003,786 litres collected through the Internet challenge

5,331 Facebook communities

Alexander Likhotal, President of Green Cross International says: "The results of the Acqua for Life Challenge are a great step forward to ensure that more people have access to safe drinking water and thereby also ensuring children are able to continue with their education. The cooperation between Green Cross International and Giorgio Armani is an innovative partnership model. A practical step to help make the Right to Water a reality. We look forward to continuing to work together in other communities".

The Acqua for Life Challenge 2011 has already benefited 10 communities, all located in the Eastern region of Ghana. The 6 other communities that will be helped are located in a region on the other side of the Volta River in the Volta Region.

A total of approximately 27,000 people living in 16 communities will thus have access to safe drinking water. Out of those 27,000 people, approx 3,500 will be kids who will enjoy water in their schooling environment, where the program will be able to provide them with a safe water supply throughout the day. 200 professors will also benefit from the installations and enjoy additional time being made available for schooling and an increase in school attendance.

At the end of the implementation of the project, about 110 community members, predominantly women, masons and mechanics will be trained to maintain and refurbish the systems, ensuring their optimal and sustainable utilisation.
