Trafalgar Square's Fountains Set To 'Go Green'

Trafalgar Square's fountains are to go green to enhance the popular tourist attraction in time for the Olympics.

An LED lighting system will replace the lights that currently illuminate the two fountains, providing coloured lighting effects and saving energy.

The Grade II listed fountains include bronze statues of mermaids, a merman, dolphins and tritons.

The new LED lighting system will cut the carbon footprint of the fountain system by an estimated 90%, saving 16,400 kg of carbon every year and is expected to save thousands of pounds on energy bills.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "It is tremendously exciting that the world-renowned Trafalgar Square fountains and their statues are set for a makeover ahead of the London Olympics.

"Millions of visitors to the square, and the myriad of events that it hosts, will benefit from this revamp."

The fountains were designed by Sir Charles Barry and were later remodelled by Sir Edwin Lutyens, with work starting in the late 1930s and being completed after World War II.

Trafalgar Square attracts about 13 million visitors every year.
