HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has said that DEWA made a significant achievement in improving electricity and water production efficiency in 2024, with a 43.61% increase compared to 2006. This equates to a cumulative reduction of 104 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions between 2006 and 2024, equivalent to planting 527 million trees to absorb this amount of CO2. Al Tayer noted that this improvement in electricity and water production efficiency contributed to DEWA's achievement of substantial financial savings.

Dubai Chamber of Commerce, one of the three chambers operating under the umbrella of Dubai Chambers, recently organised a virtual workshop on sustainability reports. The online session highlighted the important role played by sustainability reporting in enhancing transparency surrounding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards for investors, consumers, and regulatory bodies.

The Middle East, covering almost 7.3 million km2 and with an estimated population of more than 500 million, is one of the world’s key regions. Yet it is also fraught with challenges. On top of the armed conflicts in some areas which are impacting the World Bank’s growth forecasts, there is also a rise in temperatures triggered by climate change which, in the last decade alone, has almost doubled the global average: 0.45º C compared to 0.27º C, respectively.
