What Steps Can Your Biomedical Engineering Company Take to Be More Eco-Friendly?

Have you recently completely your online master of engineering in biomedical engineering and you’ve already opened up your own company? Considering how fast the field is growing, the fact that you are able to earn your online MEBME degree through a school such at Rutgers Online and then immediately open your own company should come as no surprise. But in today’s day in age, perhaps you want to take things a step further.

Besides creating a company that is built on your many skills and expertise in the areas of biomaterials, nanosystems, neurotechnology, tissue engineering, and beyond, maybe you also want to be sure your business is making sound environmental choices. So how can you be true to your industry all while taking eco-friendly steps? Here are some tips you can use you.

Look Closely at Your Building's Energy Footprint

A great place to start is to take a close look at your building's energy footprint. This is the amount of energy your building is using. Statistics gathered by the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) show that buildings make up 39% of the carbon dioxide emission here in the U.S. That leaves a lot of room for improvement.

The energy savings is now beginning in the design and construction phase by using better insulation techniques and products. Solar power and solar water heaters are another piece of technology that is now being put into use. If you are in an existing building then you may be eligible for incentive and rebate programs that help to make it more affordable to retrofit your building with today’s energy-saving technology.

Don't Throw Out Electronics

Because your line of work requires a lot of equipment and electronics, there's a good chance you'll have a high turnover rate of the equipment. Rather than throw the old electronics out, make sure you find places that will accept them for recycling. Large companies such as HP and Dell are known for their recycling and donation programs to help eliminate the amount of waste being generated.

Go Paperless Whenever Possible

Where it used to be that paper was what businesses relied on for their notes, research, documents, and files, today there is no reason that you can’t be digitizing all your content. Going paperless is not only an eco-friendly thing to do, it will also cost your business way less money. You won’t have to worry about the purchase price of paper, finding storage for all the files, and printing costs.

Change Up Your Lighting

Another really easy way to be more eco-friendly is to switch to LED lights, which use much less energy. You can also set your lights on timers so that they aren't running all day and all night just using up energy.

Every Effort Adds Up

When it comes to being eco-friendly every little effort your business takes adds up and makes a difference. While some of the tips may require changes in how you go about your business, before long they will just feel like second nature.
