Self-published with the support of the UAE Ministry of Culture, the book is designed to document and share the country’s intangible heritage in an accessible format.
Originally developed as a personal effort to explain Emirati culture to friends abroad, Under the Ghaf Tree evolved into a carefully researched and structured guide. The book presents information in a clear, engaging way, supported by visual references and original illustrations, making it useful for tourists, educators, students, and Emiratis alike.
The content spans a wide range of topics, including falconry, burqa making, date palm cultivation, maritime history, architecture, fashion, cuisine, and hospitality. Each chapter focuses on a specific area of cultural knowledge, offering practical insights alongside historical context, supported by original illustrations by artist Bayan Dahdah.
“This book is a tribute to the stories we grew up with, the traditions we carry, and the culture that shapes us,” says Al Mheiri. “I wanted to create something that explains the UAE and the Emirati culture in a way that is honest, beautiful, and approachable; something you could give to a curious visitor or a young Emirati trying to understand their roots.”
Each edition of Under the Ghaf Tree is available on the website – underghaftree.com. The book is printed locally in the UAE and includes over 100 pages of content, organised into thematic chapters for easy reference and is accompanied by visual inserts and illustrated keepsakes.
