Capturing the imagination of over 100,000 students to date, the Irish-born start-up was formed in 2010 and aims to empower young people in education with its primary offering, a Recycled Fashion Competition for all young people aged 12-18. Aspiring artists, budding designers and engineers are challenged to envision, design, create and model wearable haute couture styled from everyday junk. Incorporating elements of sustainability, fashion, art, design, engineering and performing arts, a Junk Kouture creation can be inspired by anything; but the golden rule is that the outfit must be made from 100% recycled materials.

A fashion competition like no other, Junk Kouture will develop a World Tour over the next three years, with a projected return to live events in 2022, in a Formula One style world circuit. Beginning in January 2021, the initial season will be held digitally in five new cities: Abu Dhabi, London, Milan, New York and Paris. Further digital competitions will also be added across the globe, with a transition back to a full live tour when it is safe to do so.

Students can enter as an individual or as a team with Junk Kouture encompassing broadcast, streaming and social media engagement for its 2021 competition. Finalists from UAE, France, UK, Ireland, Italy and USA will all compete in the Global Digital Final in June 2021. There will be a national champion from each territory while one talented designer will be crowned overall ‘Junk Kouture World Designer of the Year’, with a Junk Kouture scholarship on offer to each of the winning design team. The programme promotes the empowerment of young people, by challenging them to be creative and resourceful in the design process. Our community is built of like-minded creatives, and we can’t wait to see what the young people of UAE bring to the competition in 2021 and beyond. “.
