GE has been ranked as among the world’s 100 most sustainable companies for its commendable efforts in driving energy and water use efficiency, as highlighted by the achievements of its ecomagination initiative.

In the survey covering 4,000 firms, by Canadian firm Corporate Knights to identify 100 most sustainable publicly traded companies, GE ranked at No 51. This reflects the strong accomplishments derived through GE’s ecomagination initiative to imagine and build innovative solutions to solve current environmental challenges and benefit customers and society.

Nabil Habayeb, GE’s President & Chief Executive Officer for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, said: “Sustainable development is one of the core priorities of the region’s governments, led by the increasing demand for energy and water, led by the growth in population and massive infrastructure development. As a company that motivates people through innovation to solve the toughest challenges and make the world work better, GE believes in setting an example across its operations. This is underlined by the ranking as one of the world’s 100 most sustainable companies. In our focus on sustainability, our key pillar is the path-breaking ecomagination initiative.”

Today, GE has more than 85 ecomagination certified products across aviation, commercial finance, consumer finance, digital energy, energy, healthcare, lighting, oil & gas, transportation, water and appliances – touching every aspect of life.

At GE, ecomagination is also part of its work culture, and since its launch in 2005, it has served as a core to the company’s business strategy, with a focus on providing resource use efficiency and increased productivity. In 2011, revenues from ecomagination products, several of them used across the wider Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, stood at US$21 billion.

With an investment commitment of US$10 billion from 2010 to 2015 in ecomagination, GE also attained 29 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through deployment of ecomagination products, since its 2004 adjusted baseline, and 13.5 percent reduction in water use since 2010.

Among key ecomagination products used in the region include the newly introduced FlexEfficiency 60 combined cycle power plant that uses the latest in gas turbine technology to provide cleaner, more efficient energy. Another ecomagination-certified product, Jenbacher landfill gas machines are used in several markets in the region including the UAE and Lebanon.

Most recently, GE deployed its Jenbacher landfill gas engines for a landmark project by the Dubai Municipality to convert waste to energy, with the potential of generating 1 MW of power and reducing the adverse impact of greenhouse gases on the environment.

In the UAE, GE is also partnering with Masdar, and as part of its ecomagination initiative to introduce a pilot program with Masdar City to investigate the reduction of peak power demand by using smart home appliances involving some of the first residents within the development.

GE’s Waukesha 275GL+ natural gas engine, which produces lower greenhouse gas emissions relative to comparable natural gas engines, is also an ecomagination-product used in the Rumaila oilfield redevelopment project near Basra in southern Iraq. In the water sector, the company’s ZeeWeed membrane bioreactor system helps conserve and reuse wastewater, save energy and reduces environmental impacts.

The GEnx aircraft engine, which has a 15 percent lower fuelburn during cruise than the platform it replaces, has found wide acceptance in the Middle East region with customers ranging from Emirates to Etihad, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, Air Arabia, Jazeera Airways, Oman Air and Saudi Arabian.

GE’s new office in Abu Dhabi redefines the concept of sustainable design with its new green and contemporary office in Sowwah Square by using recycled, renewable and sustainable materials in its design, apart from the company’s ecomagination-certified products.

GE has a history of over 80 years of presence in the region, and has its regional headquarters in Dubai. In addition to long-term partnerships in the energy and oil & gas sector, GE offers energy-efficient lighting solutions as well as promotes sustainable healthcare and aviation practices. GE draws on the strong skills and professional capabilities of its workforce – over 4,200 across the MENAT based at 35 ground facilities in 19 countries.
